Protein Shakes May Not Be The “Whey” To Go

If your fitness regimen includes drinking protein shakes, you may experience acne flare-ups along with increased muscle. Though there is little research to date to verify a link between the supplements and worsening of acne, many dermatologists have anecdotal evidence from patients that show the result.

Proteins help your body to grow, replace, and repair cells, which is why people often consume whey protein supplements when they are trying to build muscle mass. But substances in whey protein also stimulate the production of insulin, and insulin influences sebum production, which in turn can lead to breakouts.

Consult with a registered dietitian on how much protein you need to achieve and maintain your fitness goals. Protein from food sources such as chicken, turkey, fish, beans, or tofu are a better choice than processed powders that may contain preservatives and other chemicals.
